Colouring the space
DIY - painting your home

Colours dictate the impression of each space and the skill of their combination is a powerful weapon in creating an environment. Colours can increase or decrease spaces, lower or lift ceilings, and mask disadvantages. The greatest advantage of using colours in interior design is that with little money and simple work, you can achieve dramatic results. However, the choice of colours in the apartment should be in alignment with the wishes of the host. Therefore, the interior designer adjusts the colours according to the matching rule. A contemporary architectural design uses one basic colour or a palette of uniform colours, with accents in different colours. These accents can be part of the furniture such as drawers, armchairs, showcases or TV shelves.

Let's learn about colours

The colours of the rainbow spectrum are divided into hot and cold. Warm colours are: red, orange and yellow, while cold colours are: green, blue and purple. Each of them can vary to a warmer or cooler, depending on the component that dominates it. In addition to the basic ones, there are also black, white, grey, brown, beige, ocher, pink, silver, gold ...

Yellow is the warmest colour and it symbolizes the light of the Sun. Because of its optimistic and dynamic nature, yellow is good for small rooms and for young people.

The green colour is rarely used as the dominating interior colour. Modern designers recommend this colour in reception areas, youth kitchens and workspaces. There are also people who claim that green symbolises the ecological connection between the apartment and the environment.

The blue colour makes up most of our environment. It is pleasant in the interior when reflects the colours of nature. Blue symbolizes peace, coldness, closeness to oneself, and a tendency to dream.

Violet colour is created by mixing blue and red. As a rule, it is cold and monotonous so it should not be the dominant colour in living and dining rooms. Violet is suitable for rooms with little light because regardless of the window size, it gives the character of darkness. If you love this colour, use it as a detail.

Red-a a symbol of love, passion, blood and fire. It lifts work energy, and stimulates activity but also awakens strong emotions. Designers are happy to use red, although with varying success. Red fits well with most colours, but it stands out in white-black and grey areas.

Orange colour is one of the hottest colours, full of life and optimism. Scientists claim that it encourages a faster flow of oxygen in the brain. Psychologists recommend orange for workrooms and children's rooms claiming that it stimulates intellectual development and the formation of a stable personality.

The black colour is a good complement to any colour. It brings a classy note to space, especially in bathrooms and kitchens with some reddish details. Black is unmistakable as the colour of leather furniture, but also for details - vases, sculptures, mirror frames and paintings.

White colour in theory is a set of all rainbow colours, while in practice it represents the absence of colours. White is widely used in modern interiors of all styles because it leaves the impression of science fiction where form and function dominate the aesthetics. The space character may vary depending on the colour pigment added to the white. For example, with a little blue or grey, the ambient becomes ice-cold. With orange nuances, space gets on warmth and vitality. The white colour is perfect for all combinations and decorative accents.

Brown symbolizes the ground, strength, and tenderness of autumn. That's how it should be applied.

Grey colour carries all the good of its components - black and white. It is perfectly combined with the accents of all rainbow colours.

What are the basic rules of colouring space?

The main rules for combining colours are similarity and contrast. As the word suggests, similarity means using analogue colours, like green and blue, while contrast means using complementary colours (red and green, blue and orange, violet and yellow). If you want a quiet and relaxing home atmosphere, choose similarity. The contrast is good in dynamic and creative spaces, which drive the attention of guests.
